*Significant Feature~~ The keeper's house is home to the U. S. Coast Guard's 11th District
commander, (Coast Guard Station San Francisco is located on the island). Prior to the
construction of a lighthouse on Yerba Buena Island, the island was used as a base for
lighthouse tenders, (the ships which carried supplies to the lighthouses), and also as a
repair station for West Coast lightships.
