*Significant Features~~ a) Lighthouse was decommissioned in 1860 when
Minot's Ledge
Lighthouse was put into service. b) Due to complaints from mariners that the light was
too difficult to be seen, the tower height was increased 15 feet in 1827. c) During the War
of 1812, Abigail and Rebecca Bates, daughters of keeper Captain Simeon Bates, kept the
British from landing at Scituate by playing a fife and drum with such fervor, a British
landing party  thought there to be an entire company of American soldiers nearby and
turned back to their ships in the harbor, thereby saving the town from being ransacked
and burned.
