*Current Owner~~ U. S. Coast Guard lease to Port Austin Reef Light Assn.

*Significant Feature~~ Due to weather and vandal deterioration, the lighthouse was
slated to be destroyed by th U. S. Coast Guard in the 1980's. The Port Austin Reef Light
Assn. secured a five year lease in 1988 to restore the lighthouse. (The first job to be
completed was to remove more than a foot of bird and bat droppings from the floors).
The Coast Guard extended the Assn.'s lease for an additional 30 years, until the year 2020
