*Significant Feature~~  The previous tower built here in 1834 never went into service.
Before it could be lit, a violent storm destroyed the keeper's house and undercut the
foundation. The tower was then attacked by local Seminole Indians and ransacked.
Before the tower could be repaired, it fell into the sea.
