*Significant Feature~~  The lighthouse's 32 steps are made of granite, actually embedded
into the walls of the lighthouse. No mortar was needed to attach stairs, although the
Coast Guard has added mortar for safety reasons in recent years. The original lantern
was of the "
bird cage" type, replaced by a more conventional style in the 1870's.
