*Significant Feature~~ Hunting Island is the only lighthouse in South Carolina which is
open to the public. It was constructed of cast iron plates which were designed to be
easily removed and then reassembled if the lighthouse ever had to be moved. Only 14
years after it was constructed, beach erosion forced relocation of the lighthouse to 1 1/4
miles from its original placement, (it is now only about 200 yards from the ocean).
