*Significant Feature~~  Designed by renowned U. S. Army engineer Orlando Pope, meant
to be the main navigational aid for ships entering Chicago Harbor.  One of only 5
lighthouses on the Great Lakes which used a Second Order Fresnel lens, the largest in
operation on the lakes. Since 1945, lighthouse has been considered a secondary aid to
navigation, used primarily by pleasure boaters.
